Students on the GO! is a program designed to train students to run or walk (or a combination of both!) a half marathon. Students began training in December, and are working towards completing the GO! St. Louis Half-Marathon on April 19, 2009.
Program Goals:
The goal of the program is to target students who could use the benefits of a running or walking program – both to increase fitness and health, and in order to work on goal-setting and structured activity in their daily life. For our pilot program, we chose Roosevelt High School (St. Louis Public Schools) in South St. Louis city near Tower Grove Park.
How the program works:
Students and faculty (we have 22 teachers also participating this year – most training for this distance for the first time ever!) follow a training program designed by GO! St. Louis, and meant for a true beginning runner/walker. Training days are available after school five days per week (Monday – Friday), but each participant is required to attend three days per week. Long run/walk days are Thursdays, the one day of the week where attendance is specifically required.
Incentives:
Students and teachers involved in the program earn incentives for attendance that are also a benefit to their running & walking training. These include running shoes, running jacket, and a long-sleeved technical running shirt!
Recognition:
Our Roosevelt High School team is a pleasure to work with, and we are grateful for their willingness to take on this new challenge! Special thanks to:
Terry Houston, Roosevelt HS Principal
Brian Kruger, Roosevelt HS Teacher & Students on the GO! Coordinator
We also have dedicated volunteer mentors who come out whenever they are able to run and walk with the students – helping to set goals and motivate them along the way!
Thanks to volunteers:
Tom Sherman
Brian Whitehead
