5,000 TO FOREST PARK
JUSTIN KUNZ WINS 5K RUN/WALK
ST. LOUIS, MO—Participants ranging from toddlers to 90-year-olds enjoyed a day of fitness in Forest Park, as the GO! St. Louis Family Fitness Weekend® kicked-off its eighth year.
More than 5,000 people participated in six events including the Diaper Dash, Children’s Fun Runs, Read, Right & Run Marathon®, 5K Run/Walk and the Mature Mile. Medals were awarded to all participants.
Justin Kunz, 22 from Lebanon, IL was the overall winner of the 5K Run. Kunz is a member of the St. Louis-based Big River Running Racing Team and finished with a time of 15:10, which established a new event record. Kunz eclipsed Chris Wallaert’s 2000 record time of 15:52. On the women’s side, 14-year-old Johanna Moeller from Fenton, MO finished first with a time of 22:44.
In the Master’s Division, Bruce Nie completed the 5K course in 17:44 to finish first, while Kelli Magre from Festus, MO was the woman’s top Master finisher with a time of 23:49.
5K Walk/Run: First Place Overall: Justin Kunz, Second Place Overall: Ryan Giuliano and Third Place Overall: Emisael Favela.
Event Highlights:
- More than 275 seniors, 60-years-of-age or older, participated in the Mature Mile. St. Louis Senior Center had the most seniors participating with 50 people.
- More than 3,000 children participated in the Read, Right & Run Marathon, which was a high water mark for the youth program, now in its seventh year.
- More than 1,400 participated in the 5K Run/Walk, which included 450 middle school children completing their final 3.1 miles as part of the Read, Right & Run Marathon program.
- More than 275 children participated in one of the various Kid’s Fun Runs.
“Today illustrates our organization’s mission in the truest form,” said Nancy Lieberman, president, GO! St. Louis Family Fitness Weekend. “From the smiling faces of the young children competing for the first time, to the older adults that have spent months training to complete a one mile walk. It’s not so much about being the fastest competitor today, but a celebration of every level of fitness,” she continued.

GO! St. Louis®, a non-profit organization, encourages individuals and families in the region to adopt a healthy lifestyle by getting fit, staying active, and eating a nutritional diet year round.
